Hanged Vineyard

Hanged Vineyard. A Return to the Future.

With the Hanged Vineyard project, we are reviving an ancient agricultural technique once widely used in our countryside and adapting it to the needs of modern viticulture.

In the rolling hills of Fermano, within the municipality of Montottone, we have launched a three-hectare pilot vineyard, representing one of the most ambitious agroforestry initiatives in Italy.

The Trees

During the first phase of the project, we planted approximately 600 trees, carefully selected to suit the soil characteristics and microclimate of the site.

Among these, we chose historical Marche varieties of apple and pear trees—sourced in collaboration with AMAP nurseries—as well as strategic forest species. These trees do not compete with the vines; rather, they provide protection from extreme weather events and enhance the landscape with both aesthetic and functional value.

The New Hanged Vineyards

The second phase involves the introduction of approximately 3,000 vine plants per hectare, including regional varieties such as Montepulciano, Verdicchio, Maceratino, and even Vitis Silvestris, an ancestral grape variety. Each vine will be “hanged” to a tree, a method that revives the ancient practice of integrated cultivation, where trees and vines coexisted in small, harmonious plots of land. This technique is now being reinterpreted with a modern approach.

The Benefits of Hanged Vineyards

Pairing vines with trees creates a harmonious ecosystem in which each element contributes to the balance of the environment and the quality of the wine. This method promotes soil health, biodiversity, and new possibilities for the future of viticulture.

Climate & Soil

A more stable and fertile terrain, a natural barrier against erosion and climate fluctuations.

Biodiversity & Landscape

The proliferation of beneficial insects and wildlife, fostering a more balanced ecosystem.

Wine Quality

New frontiers in high-quality viticulture, with in-depth research into the organoleptic characteristics of different plant pairings.

This long-term vision goes beyond immediate benefits—it aims to create a legacy for future generations.

An ambitious goal that, within the broader Seven Sources project, merges innovation and tradition to generate value for all.

Through the Hanged Vineyard project, Degli Azzoni Wines reaffirms its commitment to a form of viticulture that is not only sustainable but also regenerative, fostering a deep connection between the land, people, and the future of our planet.
